Job Description
As part of a hardworking team of diverse flight operations professionals, you will operate and launch near-space balloon systems. This is a growth position with on-the-job experience and training provided in order to position you for a future Flight Director role. This role will require travel, weekend, and overnight shifts in a 24/7 mission control and remote flight support environment.
Role Responsibilities
· Develop proficiency in operating flight control, planning, and safety interfaces and tools
· Develop proficiency in aviation communication protocols
· Serve as a flight controller throughout the mission and recovery
· Respond to off-nominal scenarios, taking appropriate actions to maintain vehicle and general public safety and help lead the team to resolution of anomalies
· Operate the vehicle and ground systems programs in support of vehicle testing and pre-launch preparations for mission execution (vehicle checkouts, mission simulations, etc.)
· Develop and support procedure updates for use across all phases of the operation
· Support control console and procedure upgrades
· Support systems safety activities by working toward process and documentation improvement
Qualifications
· Previous experience as an operator or flight controller, including time on console or in a control room, and familiarity with radio communication protocols
· Strong ability and desire to understand sophisticated systems, investigate and tackle challenging problems, and work in a dynamic environment
· H.S. diploma or GED with Military UAS/UAV qualification or B.S. in Engineering, Aeronautical Aviation Operations, Aviation Technology, or similar domain
· One or more of the following skills:
o 2 years of experience as an unmanned vehicle operator or manned pilot.
o A working and understandable knowledge of FAA Regulations/Airspace or a current Part 107 license
o 2 years of experience as an aviation technician or system engineer (manned or unmanned)
· Proven safety mentality
· Demonstrates the ability to understand command and control interfaces, ability to effectively communicate with crew members in a mission environment, and ability to comprehend the necessary reactive procedures during all phases of the mission.
· Strong communication skills
· Performs well in time-critical scenarios
· Strong digital literacy and ability to learn new software tools
· Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture
· Willing and able to travel and work weekend and/or overnight shifts as missions require
Bonus Points
· Experience with reading wind fields
· Experience with GIS/mapping overlays
· Experience coding simple software programs or algorithms
· Experience developing, writing and updating operating or test procedures
· Current or previous secret level security clearance
