Position Overview:

As the Molecular Technologist Lead Trainer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the proficiency and expertise of the molecular team through comprehensive training programs. Your responsibilities will encompass training assessment, design, development, implementation, and evaluation to ensure adherence to regulatory standards and the highest quality in clinical testing. As a Molecular Technologist, you will be a key contributor to our molecular diagnostics team, responsible for executing NGS protocols, ensuring quality control, troubleshooting incidents, and implementing process improvements. Your expertise in nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, and proficiency in NGS will be essential to the success of our laboratory operations.

  • Molecular Technologist Lead Trainer Responsibilities (>80% of time):

  • Maintain competency to perform all assigned molecular biology protocols in accordance with CAP, CLIA, NYSDOH regulations.

  • Work closely with the Training Supervisor to develop and execute a comprehensive training schedule for the molecular team, ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals.

  • Schedule and conduct training according to the defined schedule, providing hands-on instruction and guidance to team members.

  • Consistent communication regarding training updates/status, i.e. scheduled date of training, completion date of observations, side-by-sides, and competency assessments.

  • Tailor training plans to individual team members, as appropriate, to ensure competency and confidence prior to initiation of clinical testing.

  • Request competency modules in MediaLab and ensure completion and submissions per defined timelines.

  • Establish and update training tools/materials, as needed.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives for the training program to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the training process.

  • Molecular Technologist Responsibilities (<20% of time):

    • Perform next-generation sequencing, including nucleic acid extraction, DNA/RNA quantification and qualification, NGS library preparation, probe hybridization, probe/library capture, library cleanup and quantification, loading sequencing libraries onto the Illumina Novaseq

    • Perform routine testing, quality control, calibration, maintenance and proficiency testing in accordance with current laboratory procedures.

    • Update Standard Operating Procedures as necessary.

    • Troubleshoot incidents and perform root cause analysis on non-conformances.

    • Evaluate and implement process improvements.

    • Obtain 12 continuing education hours in the field of oncology or molecular biology.

Qualifications:

Must have:

  • One of the following educational requirements:

    • MS in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical or biological science and 1 year pertinent clinical laboratory experience with molecular biology

    • BS in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical or biological science and 3 years of pertinent clinical lab experience in molecular biology

  • Previous training or instructional experience in a scientific or laboratory setting

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in demonstrating laboratory techniques and procedures effectively

  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work and collaborate with others to plan and carry out training

  • Self-driven and works well in an interdisciplinary team with minimal direction

  • Strong desire to build products that will save lives and change the course of cancer

  • Impeccable attention to detail

Highly Desirable:

  • Experience with next-generation sequencing

  • Work in a CLIA/CAP high-complexity laboratory

  • Experience with robotics and automated liquid handling systems

  • Knowledge of LIMS platforms and various computer systems

  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies
