Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.
As a Senior Structures Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the design, analysis, and optimization of the structural components of our hypersonic aircraft. You will work on projects that require an advanced understanding of material properties, structural dynamics, and aerospace engineering principles. This is an opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking technologies in a highly innovative and challenging field.
What You Will Do as a Senior Structures Engineer (Responsibilities):
- Structural Design and Analysis:
- Lead the structural design and analysis of hypersonic aircraft components, including fuselage, wings, and control surfaces.
- Utilize CAD software, Hand Calculations, and simulation tools to develop and evaluate designs.
- Perform analysis to ensure structural integrity under extreme operational conditions.
- Material Selection and Testing:
- Design and execute qualification testing to ensure reliability of operation in demanding environments.
- Select appropriate materials for high-temperature and high-stress environments.
- Develop and oversee testing protocols for material performance and structural validation.
- Project Leadership:
- Lead cross-functional teams in the development of structural solutions.
- Mentor engineering team-members and provide technical guidance to the team.
- Innovation and Development:
- Stay abreast of the latest developments in materials science and aerospace engineering.
- Contribute to the development of proprietary technologies and innovative structural solutions.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with aerodynamics, propulsion, and systems engineering teams to optimize overall vehicle performance.
- Communicate complex technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Risk Assessment and Management:
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with structural designs.
- Develop contingency plans and perform failure mode analyses.
About You (Minimum Qualifications):
- Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural engineering, preferably in the aerospace or defense industries.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks) and FEA tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus).
- Working experience with structural testing and validation.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven experience with aircraft or rockets (preferred).
- Knowledge of aerospace standards and certification processes (e.g., MIL-STD, FAA regulations) (preferred).
- Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
