Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.
We are seeking a highly skilled Aerospace CNC Machinist/Programmer to join our dynamic manufacturing team. This role is essential to producing precision aerospace components by programming, setting up, and operating CNC machines. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in CNC machining, an eye for detail, and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards in a fast-paced aerospace environment.
Key Responsibilities
- **CNC Programming: ** - Develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs using CAD/CAM software (e.g., Siemens NX, MasterCAM, or similar). - Create efficient toolpaths to meet engineering specifications and maximize machine performance. - Ensure programs comply with aerospace industry standards and tolerances (AS9100, ISO9001).
- **Machine Setup and Operation: ** - Set up and operate multi-axis CNC machines (e.g., mills, lathes, and grinders) for the production of aerospace parts. - Select and install appropriate tools, fixtures, and materials for each project. - Verify machine setups and first articles before production runs.
- **Quality Assurance: ** - Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, CMM, etc.). - Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing). - Identify and address deviations to maintain product quality and adherence to specifications.
- **Continuous Improvement: ** - Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve machining processes and cycle times. - Evaluate and recommend new tools, technologies, and methodologies to enhance productivity and reduce costs. - Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of CNC machines to minimize downtime.
- **Compliance and Safety: ** - Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized workspace. - Ensure all work complies with aerospace regulatory standards and company policies.
About You:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in machining preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in CNC machining and programming, preferably in the aerospace industry.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (e.g., Siemens NX, MasterCAM, CATIA, or SolidWorks).
- Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, and tooling specific to aerospace applications.
- Familiarity with G-code, M-code, and CNC control systems (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, Mazatrol).
- Skilled in interpreting complex engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong attention to detail and precision.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Effective communication and documentation skills.
Desired Multipliers:
- Experience in a startup development environment
- Experience working in a flight development program
- Experience working with Inconel and Titanium
- Experience machining 3D printed parts, castings, or forgings
- Experience transitioning parts from first article to production
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Comfortable standing for extended periods and working in a manufacturing environment.
Desired Multipliers
- Experience with 5-axis CNC machining and aerospace-grade materials (e.g., titanium, Inconel, aluminum).
- Certification in machining or manufacturing processes (e.g., NIMS, ASQ).
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma.
